TWISTS OF X(7) AND PRIMITIVE SOLUTIONS TO x + y = z

چکیده
We find the primitive integer solutions to x + y = z. A nonabelian descent argument involving the simple group of order 168 reduces the problem to the determination of the set of rational points on a finite set of twists of the Klein quartic curve X. To restrict the set of relevant twists, we exploit the isomorphism between X and the modular curve X(7), and use modularity of elliptic curves and level lowering. This leaves 10 genus-3 curves, whose rational points are found by a combination of methods.

In a paper of Kraus, it is proved that x 3 + y 3 = z p for p 17 has only trivial primitive solutions, provided that p satisses a relatively mild and easily tested condition. In this article we prove that the primitive solutions of x 3 + y 3 = z p with p = 4; 5; 7; 11; 13, correspond to rational points on hyperelliptic curves with Jaco-bians of relatively small rank. Consequently, Chabauty metho...

متن کاملThe Generalised Fermat Equation
We determine the set of primitive integral solutions to the generalised Fermat equation x + y = z. As expected, the only solutions are the trivial ones with xyz = 0 and the non-trivial pair (x, y, z) = (±3,−2, 1).
